Among the worst offenders of BAD IDEAS is 5 Minute Crafts and their DIY mermaid monofins. I made it 3 seconds into the video and had to stop. 🙄

In today's video I am going to be giving my thoughts on mermaid tail safety in response to a recent article that came out on Today.com in which a father warns about the dangers of swimming in a mermaid tail... Mermaid tail safety is a serious concern and as a professional mermaid I have some opinions on this. We need to talk.

Happy Swimming! Courtney Mermaid What is Mermaiding?
Typically we refer to the act of swimming in or spending time in a mermaid tail as mermaiding. Where should my child start? Children need to be confident swimmers. They need to show you that they are responsible around water. Children should be able to use flippers or a child's monofin with confidence before using a full tail. SAFETY FIRST. Where to buy your child's first tail? Fin Fun is a great place to buy your child their first tail. Wherever you decide to purchase your child's first tail, please do your research first. Look for reviews and feedback from the mermaid community. Remember that cheaper isn't always better. Remember that your child will be swimming in the tail and safety should always come first. What about the mermaid community? A lot of different pods around the world host mermaid meet ups and will post the when and where on facebook or on the main mermaid community forum, the MerNetwork. Meet ups are a wonderful way for your child to meet other mermaids and make new friends as mermaids of all ages often come out. Remember that as with anything your child is involved in or has access to, it is important to talk to them about it and keep the communication easy and open. As with anything in the real world or online, there are dangers and it is important to be aware of what your child is accessing online. There are so many benefits to mermaiding at any age and if you child does show some interest, just make sure that they are being safe and try to have an open mind. Happy Swimming! |
