Hey my fishes! Courtney Mermaid coming at you with another epic blog post all about the essential filming gear I use to capture my mermaid adventures underwater!

Let's dive in!

First off, let's start with the camera. I personally use the GoPro HERO 6 and it has been my favourite underwater camera of the many I have tried in my 14 years as a mermaid.

I do know fishes who have tried the GoPro HERO 7 and really enjoy it as well.

Overall, I love the quality of my footage and this camera is fairly easy to use and works reliably.

I also LOVE the fact that you can actually film upside down with it do and it will correct the footage for you. THIS IS HUGE for mermaids who are at a pool where the suction cup won't stick to the surfaces available. It makes all the difference and some of my cooler shots recently have been using that feature.
The next most common question I am asked is about my suction cup mount. This is the one I use and I have been very happy with it so far. It does have it's limitations which is why I do recommend pairing it with the Handler (below) because together they give you the versatility to get some wicked shots without ruining your swimming experience.

The suction cup works REALLY well on smooth surfaces and if you happen to have a dive weight, you can actually get really creative with shots looking up from the pool floor by propping it up with the weight to hold it in place.

Most of the crew that I swim with on the regular uses and loves their suction cup mounts.

Now we come to the Handler. This was one I wasn't sure how much I was going to use, but honestly I would be lost without it.

When you are at a super crowded pool, TRUST ME when I tell you that messing around with suction cups and dropping your camera in the deep end is the LAST thing you want to be dealing with.

The Handler FLOATS! It's awesome! I love this tool for getting my classic mermaid "selfie swims" where I film myself while swimming. You can articulate the head which means you can get beautiful shots of your other mers from lots of angles. Depending on the pool you are at, if the ledge has a lip, you can even pop your camera upside down and it will balance on its head, giving you a great partially submerged shot. I just recently discovered this and I am really pleased with how my footage turned out.
Last but certainly not least is my favourite dive mask. I love to use this when I am mertending for other mermaids. It works super well and is very comfortable. Just remember not to smile, or you'll get a little water in there haha!

These are also very handy if you are trying to get a tricky shot and want to line the camera up first as they have such a nice big viewing area as opposed to regular goggles that are a bit squished and skewed.

I bring these to the pool whenever I go because they are also super beneficial to have when you do eventually, accidentally drop your camera in the deepest part of the pool and need to retrieve it.
