There are so many avenues and so many different ways to run a mermaid business above and beyond swimming in a mermaid tail for kid's birthday parties. It's very common for people to pigeonhole mermaids into a single business category, when in fact there are SO MANY ways to do it.
Running a mermaid-themed business is not an easy job to do. It is definitely a labor of love. If, at the beginning, you can't hire someone to help you, you will likely end up doing ALL OF IT YOURSELF. Example: designing logos, building websites, running social media channels, editing content, writing blog posts, making ads, taking photos, creating costumes/accessories, managing your business, doing your finances, EVERYTHING. It can be a bit overwhelming to start and it does take a level of passion and dedication to even those moments when you just don't want to be bothered anymore. There are a lot of different ways that you can go about it. You can create mermaid YouTube videos, you could create a line of mermaid merch, you could start a blog and do affiliate marketing, you could teach, or you could make specific mermaid products (tails, tops, accessories). You can do so many different things. The sky (or the sea haha) is the limit! Where are you going to host your business? Where are you going to advertise your business? I use Shopify for my online shop and Weebly to host my many website. I also use Patreon, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube to build a community around my business. When it comes to the behind the scenes of running a mermaid business it can definitely be overwhelming for sure. There isn't a day that I don't question what I'm doing, but there also isn't a day when I don't appreciate and feel extreme gratitude for this journey that I'm on. You also have to remember that turning your passion into your job can be a tricky thing. It's 100% OK to leave mermaiding as a hobby and NOT turning it into your day job. I feel like I need to remind people of that side of it too. Turning your hobby into your day job means you don't have something to fall back on when you are stressed out about your job. You might find yourself ALWAYS working. For me it works, because I am just that passionate about what I do and I have committed to this 100,000%. It has become my everything. Keeping yourself going even when you don't want to, that's what will separate you from the other mers attempting to do this full time. You will need to know how to self-motivate and how to take breaks versus quitting entirely when things get tough (because it does happen). If you would like to learn more about what I do and how I do it, I actually have a full mermaid mentorship program that is designed to help guide you and network with other mermaids that are building their businesses.
