Practicing Figure 8 Flips Underwater

I don't know about you, but I have thoroughly been enjoying my mermaid experience on and offline over the last little while!

Swimming in leggings with my friends, doing tricks, practicing new moves, it's been a blast!

I have taken all of the pressure off of myself and have finally been able to focus back in on what actually matters to me when it comes to mermaiding: creating mermaid magic through my shop, my mermaid experience underwater, and time spent with my mer friends. 💖
On this particular swim I asked Mermaid Bjossa to help me with my figure 8 flips (something I've been struggling a bit with recently). Without a doubt, Mermaid Bjossa does the most appealing figure 8 flips and so I was really excited when she agreed to help a fish out!
Mermaid figure 8 flips with a surface are hard to do! Mermaid Bjossa gives me some serious pointers and helps me get back on track! 💖
Arm placement seems to be a large part of my issue and why I seem to "stall" when I get to the arc of my flip. I can also see, after reviewing the footage WAY TOO MANY TIMES HAHA, that I'm missing a kick between my two turns. So! The next time I hit the pool, I will try that out since I hadn't noticed it last time I went. This is honestly why it can be very beneficial to film yourself, even if you never share the footage.

We were also tinkering with a few back flips and at the tail-end of the video (pun totally intended) Bjossa actually does a really epic vertical infinity flip!

Now it's something I really want to try!

I feel so blessed to have such a supportive fish to swim with! She never makes me feel badly when my physical limitations get in the way and any time I have a breakthrough with something (even something as small as touching the bottom of the pool) she cheers me on and it makes all the difference! 💖

I'm very excited for our next swim session to see what other new moves we can come up with and to see if I can finally nail an EPIC figure 8 flip!

Happy Swimming!

Mermaid Training in Deep Water

Courtney Mermaid swimming in the Finis Foil.
I've been really enjoying swimming lately in my rash guard and leggings with a monofin (in this case the Finis Foil - an EXCELLENT practice fin that I highly recommend for its inconspicuous shape and size).

Lately I've really been focusing in on the experience and technique as I feel like my more mermaid look is pretty much where I want it to be.

I've also started working on a new tail for 2022 and as I anticipate this tail being a little bit heavier than the tails I'm used to, I want to work on strength, stamina, and overall mobility in and out of the water.
Something interesting to observe in this video is the different fins in motion and each of our unique swimming styles. From the large, flowy Fantasea 3 fin, to the smaller Finis Foil, and of course the Linden fin (a more traditional style monofin for mermaiding), each have their own vibes and benefits.

I love the Foil because it gives me everything I need without drawing a TON of attention from pool staff and onlookers. It basically just looks like to flippers attached together with ample room between your ankles to give you proper foot/leg alignment. It's also very lightweight and comfortable and fits a wide range of sizes.

Overall I highly recommend this fin for practice swims as it makes the whole experience far simpler as I'm not having to haul a giant tail bag with a huge monofin in it.

Do you have a preferred monofin for practice swims? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Happy Swimming!

Mermaid Swims Outside at Night

This mermaid swims outside at night in the dark... Swimming in the dark, outside is one of my favourite things! Nothing beats a spooky evening spent underwater! 👻 Have you ever been on a mermaid swim at night, outside?
A few things that are definitely not super obvious in the video:

1. I can't see ANYTHING. The only thing I can make out is the colour of the lights. I can't see the bottom of the pool, or the walls, or even my camera. Why? Your ability to see underwater is HUGELY dependent on the amount of light available. On a bright sunny day I can see well enough to make out faces and even expressions underwater. Cool right?

2. Parts of the pool were FREEZING COLD. Any time I do a backflip, my face dips into the COLDEST WATER EVER! Well maybe not EVER, but it was chilly as heck!

3. I'm actually not alone for this swim! I do my best to always swim with a buddy because SAFETY FIRST. I was sad that none of the footage I took with me AND Mermaid Zelda turned out nicely. I ended up make a last-minute decision to just shorten the video and tell a different story instead.

I hope I get to do another night swim in this pool again soon! It was absolutely breathtaking and swimming at night has to be one of my fave spooky activities!

Happy Swimming!
