Mermaid Tail Repair

There may come a time where you find yourself wanting or needing to freshen up or repair your mermaid tail.

Here are some helpful tips:
Picture

fabric shaving

Part of the normal wear and tear of using a mermaid tail in any capacity (in or out of the water) is the risk for creating spots of fuzz and/or pilling.

Thankfully this is generally really easily repaired with the use of a fabric shaver (also referred to as a pill shaver)!

❗ warning ❗

Fabric shavers are rotating razorblades and CAN CREATE HOLES if you are not very careful!

Don’t press hard and go SLOW!
Using small, gentle, circular movements, you may use the fabric shaver to remove the fuzz and help restore a smooth surface to your tail.

Now depending on the extent of the damage, some of the colour may lift as you shave and unfortunately that is something that is also to be expected. I will also be discussing the use of fabric markers which, used sparingly, might also help.

Fabric Markers

Picture
In some extreme instances you may wish to touch up damage to your tail that has left visibly white areas and for that you can use fabric markers.

I have some of my favourites linked in my Amazon shop here.

❗ Use the markers very sparingly because it is almost impossible and highly unlikely that you will be able to match the colours of your tail perfectly.

An example of where I would use a fabric marker is in a spot that has been rubbed through or around a hole before stitching it up.

Also make sure that you test your markers our on scrap fabric or on a spot on the tail that is not obviously visible (like inside your folded waistband) before proceeding with any changes.

Follow the instructions that come with your makers as some will need to be heat-set with an iron, others may not.

Disclaimer

Fabric shaving, and fabric markers are not foolproof and have the potential to further damage your tail.
